What is Post
Nasal Drip
Post nasal drip (PND) means that excess mucous produced in the sinus
cavities drips down the back of the throat. Mucous is a product made by the
cells lining the sinus passages. (see Photo).
Its function is to trap tiny particles such
as dust etc and stop them filtering into our breathing systems. That is why
it is thick and sticky. Unfortunately, due to many reasons (explained later)
we often make too much mucous. When this occurs the mucous does not drain
properly and stagnates. The old
mucous settles onto the floor of the sinuses and becomes sticky and crusty
and difficult to remove. Mucous also causes swelling of the sinus lining, as well as bleeding, polyps and irritation. Excess mucous production or Post Nasal Drip
(PND) will directly affect your breath as it is high in proteins and
is an excellent food source for anaerobic bacteria. Excess mucous,
once settled on your nasal and throat lining, can irritate, causing a sore throat, and
the belief that you may be coming down with a cold.
Bad Breath
Contributing Factor
When we see patients at our clinics with bad breath, the most common link in
all chronic cases is that of Post Nasal Drip (PND) and excess mucous. This
has led us to many discussions with ENT surgeons and the development of FESS
NASAL IRRIGANT. FESS is an isotonic saline wash that makes the cilia
(nasal hairs) function normally whilst clearing the old crusty mucous and
thinning out the excess mucous, encouraging its proper drainage. FESS should
be
used regularly and can be recommended as a daily nasal irrigant and cleaner.
